The Great Gatsby

You might know this story because of the Leonardo DiCaprio movie. It is about a self-made millionaire called Jay Gatsby pursuing Daisy Buchanan, a woman who he used to love in his youth.

While the summary sounds like a cute, romantic adventure, the story has undertones of social prejudice that represents that time period. The rich had a mindset where they believed anyone who led a prim and proper lifestyle like theirs were the only normal people and others were low lives. The only measurement of success was wealth and anyone who did not lead a wealthy lifestyle was looked down on. In addition, people from other walks of life are also looked down on by the characters in the story.

F. Scott Fitzgerald did a wonderful job of conveying the societal structures that represented his time period through a wonderful story that captures the readers’ hearts.

Frankenstein’s monster

A tale that became so iconic that it became a monster class on its own, Frankenstein’s monster is a story that everyone is familiar with. most people have a misunderstanding that the Frankenstein is the monster, but the story tells you that the misunderstanding is not too far off.

Driven by ambition to create the perfect lifeform, Frankenstein creates a creature with all the perfect properties by stitching bodies together. Only after giving it life, did Frankenstein realize that he made a mistake — that he created a monster.

The monster is as innocent as a newborn baby, but is treated by everyone he meets as a monster. This tells a story of prejudice where people judge the monster solely by how he looks and is abused not just verbally, but also physically doing irreparable damage to his soul.

Mary Shelly tells a story for the ages, reeling in both children and adults while conveying a message of empathy, understanding, and the social prejudices that people face because of who they are.

A Room with a View

A book by E. M. Forster, A Room with a view takes us on a journey with Lucy Honeychurch, who wishes to navigate societal expectations, love and self-discovery during her trip to Italy. This is a must-read classic that explores the norms of a woman in the time period this was written in.

A Room with a View explores the theme of prejudice through the blatant sexism women face in society. Often expected to fit in a role, Lucy goes through experiences that are simply shaped by her gender. It showcases the limited rights women held during this time period outside their home.

This provides perspective on how far we have been liberated from the chains that held down women in society. Although it is not perfect still and women are still prejudiced to this day, it really shows how we have been able to make the world more accessible to women.
