The practical next step is a book at a pace people already hold. Alice in Wonderland and The Jungle Book are the ones the most people type, at median speeds of 56 and 59. Dracula is the next step up, at 64. The full ranking is in best books for typing practice.

How we counted

All figures are from Typersguild, counted on 18 October 2026.

The 90-day paragraph figures come from finished paragraphs with a speed from 5 to 250 words per minute and accuracy from 50% to 100%. The year-long speed bands use the same filter on saved paragraphs. Return counts use distinct people and distinct calendar days in that 90-day paragraph set.

Country rows use the same 90-day paragraphs, grouped by the country recorded with the event, and keep countries with at least 100 people. Letter and pair rates come from the cumulative key record across 3,119 typists. A letter needed 200,000 presses to be listed. A pair needed 80,000 occurrences.

The 37.8 adjusted words per minute comparison is the median computer result in the 2026 Scientific Reports paper on a one-sentence typing test in a US panel. It is a different task from a paragraph of a book, which is why both numbers are worth keeping side by side.
